Will AI replace Human-created headshots?
After ten years behind the camera, I’ve watched a lot change in the portrait world — but this question keeps popping up lately.
The short answer? Maybe… but only for the kinds of images that don’t really matter.
There are industries where a visual presence is--well--an afterthought so to speak. This is a business where a quick, AI-generated headshot might be “good enough.”
Think placeholders. Generic bios. No connection required.
But the work I do? The people I work with? Not for them. But let's explore the difference in these two groups.
When There's Too Much At Syake
These entrepreneurs really are their brand. It’s too important to leave it up to an “artificial” photographer that will create a "fake".
I’m talking about realtors, doctors, coaches, attorneys, financial professionals, and other types of entrepreneurs — the kind of businesses where trust is everything and where the decision to work with someone is based just as much on who they are as what they do.
In those cases, a headshot isn’t just a picture, or even just a “first impression” (as important as that is). It’s the spark of connection. And it has to feel real.
AI can’t do that.
Here's An Example...
Let’s say you’re searching for a therapist for your teenager.
You start to search online. The profiles you see are not only flat and without personality…some are blurry or badly lit — clearly snapped in a hurry or on a phone. Others—maybe AI—they just look too perfect. Too polished. Like a stock photo trying too hard!
None of them make you feel good about reaching out.
You’re looking for a warm, welcoming face—a human who is grounded and looks like she can help you and you can talk to about a pretty serious need.
That’s what intentional, skillful photography delivers. It's the power of a well-crafted , authentic headshot or personal branding portrait in an AI-saturated (already!) world.
When You Need More Than A Headshot
You might step into a BRANDING photo session. It's taking the "know-you", "trust-you" and "like you" to a bigger level.
It's about capturing the many facets of YOU and your business. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Lifestyle Shots: What do you love to do? Where do you hang out? You might opt to incorporate your hobbies and interests into your photos to give your audience a glimpse into your world outside of work and business. You might sprinkle in shots of your pet, your spouse, your kids, depending on what you want to show to the world.
- At Work/Behind the Scenes: Show your clients what it's like to work with you. Capture you in action, whether it's leading a workshop, creating your products, or brainstorming ideas. This can incorporate other people (models) to act as clients in our storyteller session option.
- Tools of the Trade: Showcase the tools and equipment that help you do what you do best. These add a visual element that tells a story about your expertise.
- Flatlays & Vignettes: These styled shots are perfect for social media and marketing materials. They're a creative way to showcase your products or services and add a touch of visual interest.
Remember, the goal is to create a collection of images that reflect your brand's unique personality and connect with your ideal clients. At our studio, we guide you through this sometimes-scary undertaking so you can finally have photos to use everywhere…on your website, in your social posts, on your profiles, and so much more.
